This letter is from the collection of Mathilda “Tilla” (nee Nieland) Hölter. Herman Franz Nieland (1885-1957) of Breda, Iowa wrote the letter to his brother Franz Josef Nieland (1882-1972) in Osterfeld, Germany. Herman emigrated from Germany in 1910. He owned a farm near Breda, Iowa. The letter mentions packages of clothing and lard, that Herman sent to his nieces and nephews in Germany after WWII, when goods and money were scarce. Elly is probably Franz Nieland's eldest daughter, Elisabeth (Nieland) Scheiermann (1909-2003). Bernhard and Theodor are her sons.

 Breda, 29th January 1948
Dear Brother!
Yesterday I got your kind letter of January 4th and saw that you recieved two packages from here with the can of lard and boys clothing that was for Elly of course. The other package with two cans of lardbut only half as big of girls clothes. The confusion started here. The shopkeeper A.J. Ricke and I packed the packages. His wife wrote the address on it. It got late - afternoon. I said, I have to go home and care of my cattle. He should bring both to the post office. Hence, the confusion. Elly wrote that her two boys Bernhard and Theodor were very disappointed with the first package. That´s why I want to ask you to straghten out the fuss as well as possible. Hopefully that will comfort B. and Th. The day before yesterday I also got the letter from Wilhelmine. Now I will close with a request for your prayers!
