Barbara R. Nieland, age 80, of Sac City, Iowa, died Monday, July 13, 2009, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.

Barbara Ruth Nieland was born February 20, 1929, in Galva, Iowa, the daughter of George and Mary (Dahm) Reis. She grew up in the Early area, graduating from Early High School in 1947.

On February 10, 1948, Barbara was united in marriage to Cyril Nieland at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm north of Sac City where they raised their family of seven children. They continued to live on the farm their entire married life.

Barbara was employed for 17 years as a home health care aide for Sac County Public Health. Her boundless energy, strong work ethic, integrity, compassionate nature, and strength of character will be sorely missed.

A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City, Barbara was active in the Ladies’ Guild. She also was a master quilter and enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, and baking in her spare time.

Survivors include her husband, Cyril: six children, Steve (Rose) Nieland, Jerry (Deb) Nieland, Shirley Mitchell, Bruce (Robin) Nieland, all of Newall, Ann (Randy) Bonde of Alexander, and Brenda (Coby) Shank of Clive; a daughter-in-law, Ina Rae Nieland of Carroll; 16 grandchildren; and sic great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Herbert (June) Reis of Early; three sisters. Florence (Wayne) Cook of Steuart, Charlotte (Russ) Latta of Ames. And Janet (Duane) Luchtel of Grain Valley, MO; a sister-in-law, Mary Reis of Omaha, NE; a brother-in-law, Duane Ludwig of Sioux Rapids; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jean Ann Nieland; her parents; three brothers, Joe, John, and Paul Reis; and three sisters, Grace Ludwig, Mary Ann Bain, and Rita Mitchell.
