John H. Hoebing Died In Oklahoma

Passed Away Friday, November 16, Following Extended Illness - Formerly Lived Here

WAS NEARLY 86 YEARS OLD

Mrs. B G. Schettler received the sad news of the death of her father, John H. Hoebing, which occurred Friday, November 16, at 1:45 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Schettler and H. J. Nieland left Saturday to attend the funeral.

John Hoebing, son of Henry and Christina Hoebing, was born in the woods near Quincy, Illinois, on November 26, 1848. At the time of his death he was 85 years, 11 months and 21 days old. He received his early education in the schools at Quincy, and later attended St. Francis college at that place. In the spring of 1870, with the intention of visiting Minneapolis and St. Paul, he took a ferry boat and sailed up the Mississippi. He stopped at Dubuque and Delaware county. While in Delaware county he secured a position as teach in the parochial school at Petersburg, where he continued to teach for a number of years.

On May 8, 1878, he was united in marriage to Angela Nieland. They resided at Petersburg for three years, during which time Mr. Hoebing continued to teach school. In 1876 they moved to Sac county while the country was still virgin prairie and endured the hardships of pioneer settlers of those days. During the winter months he taught in neighboring country schools, and was also much interested in politics. Being much interested in Travel and having already seen many of the states of the union, he joined the First American Pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1899.

In the spring of 1890 they moved to a farm a short distance north of Breda where they resided until 1902, when they moved to a farm near Okarche, Oklahoma. They resided there until 1911 when they retired from active labor and moved to Okarche, where Mr. Hoebing served the town as mayor for several years. In 1923 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at which all the living children were present.

Mr. and Mrs. Hoebing were the parents of eleven children of whom six preceded then in death. Mrs. Hoebing died on February 27, 1925.

He lived alone until September 3, 1925, when he married Mrs. Bertha Moser of Pittsburg [sic], Pennsylvania.

Mr. Hoebings illness dates back to the spring of 1926 when he was seriously injured in a runaway accident. Since that time he has been failing in health and has been confined to his home for the last three years. On October 26, he was injured in a fall, caused by paralysis, and since that time has been bedfast. He continued to grow weaker until the time of his death. He passed from this life well fortified with the last rites of the Catholic church.

He is preceded in death by his wife and six children. Leaving to morn are his wife, three sons and two daughters; Emma, Mrs. B.G. Schettler of this place; Frances, Mrs. Ed Bosold of Early; George of Chickasha, Okla.; Ed, of Okarche, Okla.; Leonard of Boulder City, Nevada. He is also survived by an aged brother Anton of Quincy, Illinois, a stepson Frank Moser of Pittsburg [sic], thirty one grandchildren and the great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at Holy Trinity church at Okarche and interment took place in the Catholic Cemetery.
