Louis Christopher Nieland  1901-1985

Louis C. Nieland, 83, a retired Breda farmer, died at 9 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 1985, at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian Burial was concelebrated at 1:30 p.m. Monday, October 7, at St. Bernard's church in Breda with the Revs. Thomas Munn, Leo Schumacher and Dennis Sefcik as celebrants. Sister Pauline Wittry was lector and gift-bearers were grandchildren John, Denise and Jim Nieland. Granddaughter Janet Nieland read a poem entitled, "What is a Grandpa?"

Burial was in the parish cemetery. Serving as active casket bearers were Arnold, Walter, Robert, Paul and Dennis Nieland and Leo Braun. Honorary bearers were members of the Breda Catholic Order of Foresters.

Sharp Funeral Home in Breda was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Nieland is survived by his wife, Martha, Breda; three sons; David, Breda; Roger and his wife Mary Ann, Breda; and Mark, South Amboy, NJ; four grandchildren, Janet, John, Denise and Jim Nieland, and a brother, Herman Nieland of Breda.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; Henry G., Frank, George, William, Ben and Joe; and eight sisters; Mary Steinkamp, Maggie Mueggenborg, Sister Florina, Catherine in infancy; Sister Sigmunda, Bertha Braun, Anna Wittry and Rose Wittrock.

Mr. Nieland was born in Breda on October 7, 1901, a son of Henry and Anna Koester Nieland. He spent his entire life in the Breda area, attended country school and St. Bernard's school in Breda.

On September 19, 1933, he was married to Martha Braun at St. Joseph Church in LeMars by the Rev. Leo Schumacher. After their marriage, they farmed northwest of Breda until they retired in 1967 and moved into Breda. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in September of 1983.

He was a member of St. Bernard's church and the Catholic Order of Foresters, of which he was a 50-years member and had served as a trustee for many years.
